Dialup Internet Access: Change the way your computer dials to connect to the Internet.
The information below should help you to adjust the way your computer dials to make a network connection. Print this information (if needed) and set your computer to dial 1 plus area code using the instructions that pertain to your operating system. If you need assistance, call 1-760-248-1000 during regular hours or 1-760-887-7483 for after-hours help. This needs to be done ASAP, as the change will become mandatory October 24, 2009.
What is an Area Code Overlay?
An overlay is the addition of another area code to the same geographic region as an existing area code. In this instance, the 442 area code is being added to the region served by 760. An overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code or telephone number, but it does require callers with both area codes to dial 1 + area code + the 7-digit number for all calls.
Who is affected?
Anyone who has a telephone number with a 760 area code is affected. The 760 area code serves communities from the Mammoth Lakes area in the north, south to the Mexican border, Camp Pendleton and Northern San Diego count on the west, and east to the state line.
How will calls in the 760 area code need to be dialed?
The new 442 area code is being added to the region served by 760. Since two area codes will soon serve the same region, customers with a 760 (or 442) area code must now dial 1 + the area code for all calls – including calls within the same area code.
This means, if you have a 760 phone number and call another 760 phone number, you will have to dial 1 + the area code. You will no longer be able to dial just the 7-digit phone number. You will be required to dial 11 digits.
When will the change begin?
Beginning May 2, 2009, all customers with a 760 area code should begin dialing 1 + the area code for ALL calls. There will be a grace period, so if you forget and dial just seven digits during the grace period, your call will still be completed.
Beginning October 24, 2009, if you do not use 1 + the area code, your call will not be completed and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again.
Beginning November 21, 2009, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the 442 area code.
What will remain the same?
- Your telephone number, including current area code, will not change.
- The price of a call, your coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.
- What is a local call now will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed.
- You can still dial just three digits to reach 411, 611, 911, and other 3-digit numbers that may be available in your community.
